The World Health Organization has called for firms to crank up face mask and medical gear production by 40%. Mask-makers have been globally racing to meet surging demand amid the coronavirus — even electronics firms like Japan's Sharp and iPhone assembler Foxconn have started doing so. The global health body also warned that panic buying and misuse of such gear will put health workers' lives at risk. Consumers globally — including Japan, Italy, the US and Indonesia's capital Jakarta have been clearing shelves of face masks, food and toilet paper.
